Chi Nei tsang: the healing benefits of organ massage

After completing his studies in 2003, Michiel Kaemingk discovered the art of massage, which quickly became his lifelong passion. Among his many skills, he specializes in the Chinese abdominal organ massage, known as Chi Nei Tsang. This deeply transformative technique requires a strong sense of trust between client and masseur and is known for promoting profound relaxation and release.

In this article, Michiel shares his insights into the practice of Chi Nei Tsang, its benefits, and what makes it such a powerful form of healing.

A Holistic Approach to Healing

"From the moment I started massaging, I immersed myself in this profession," Michiel explains. In addition to his work as a masseur, he is also a certified yoga teacher and breathwork coach. He further enhanced his expertise by completing a three-year training as a coach and trainer at Phoenix Opleidingen in 2018.

"For me, the head, body, and mind are inextricably linked. Through these three disciplines, I can bring everything together. To me, massaging is one of the deepest ways of making contact—beyond words. Seeing someone step off the table completely Zen, perhaps even relieved of a complaint, always fills me with gratitude."

What Is Chi Nei Tsang Massage?

Chi Nei Tsang, often referred to as organ massage, is deeply rooted in Chinese Medicine. Michiel explains:

"According to Taoist philosophy, life begins at the navel, a cosmic gateway that connects us to the universe. Even after birth, this area transforms external energies into vital life force and allows toxins to leave the body through the navel region."

From the navel, all body systems are interconnected: the blood vessels, lymphatic system, nerves, muscles, and the meridian system. This creates a profound unity between the body, mind, and soul.

During a Chi Nei Tsang session, the abdominal organs are massaged, and corresponding organ points on the navel ring are opened. Michiel elaborates:
"The treatment focuses on the intestines, stomach, spleen, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, heart, lungs, kidneys, reproductive organs, diaphragm, plexus, and psoas muscle. The lymphatic system and blood circulation are also balanced, promoting overall wellness."

Is Chi Nei Tsang Known in The Netherlands?

"Chi Nei Tsang is relatively well-known among those who study Shiatsu, acupressure, or other forms of Chinese Medicine," Michiel says. However, not all practitioners incorporate it into their treatments.

"Many masseurs avoid the abdomen altogether, which is unfortunate because there is so much potential for healing in this area. It’s also a vulnerable region where emotions are stored, so building a relationship of trust is essential before working on it."

What Causes Painful Pressure Points in the Belly?

Painful pressure points in the abdominal area are often the result of energetic blockages. These can stem from various causes, including unprocessed grief, daily stress, or work-related pressure. Michiel explains:

"Think of a stressful situation—where do you feel it first? Often in your stomach. It churns, you may experience intestinal issues, or your digestion becomes irregular. These blockages can settle in the organs, leading to discomfort."

He continues:
"The pressure points can produce sensations ranging from dull aches to sharper pains, sometimes radiating to other areas like the genital zones. However, under the hands of a skilled masseur, combined with focused breathing and relaxation, the pain begins to dissolve. You feel energy start to flow again, often accompanied by a warm, soothing sensation in the belly."

A unique aspect of Chi Nei Tsang? Clients often feel the need to visit the restroom after the massage.
"This happens because the treatment stimulates the digestive system and helps clear out toxins. The result is a wonderfully light and clean feeling in the stomach," Michiel notes.

Why Consider a Chi Nei Tsang Massage?

Chi Nei Tsang is more than just a massage—it’s a holistic approach to healing that:

  • Releases emotional blockages stored in the abdomen.

  • Improves digestive health and promotes detoxification.

  • Balances the lymphatic and circulatory systems, enhancing overall wellness.
